Challenge triathlon tops weekend events in South Okanagan

PENTICTON - Challenge Penticton is one of the bigger events this weekend in the South Okanagan.

Challenge Penticton takes place Sunday, July 23 from 5:30 a.m. to 12 noon with a new race distance this year.

The Challenge half will take place on the upcoming long distance worlds course, with options of competing as a single entrant or as a team. The staging area is in Rotary Park. Challenge Penticton also stages an aqua bike course for 2017, with a 1.9 km swim and a 90 km bike ride. For more information, see the Challenge Penticton website.

Community Markets for this weekend include the Penticton Community and Farmers' Markets and the Okanagan Falls Community Market.

The Penticton Community Market runs from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Farmers' Market from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 22. The Okanagan Falls Community and Farmers Market runs Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a bouncy castle, local musicians, fresh vegetables and local crafters.

Penticton’s Leir House holds a Sunday Arts Market July 23 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. with live music, art and more. Call 250-492-7997 for more details.

The second annual Branch 40 Royal Canadian Legion Toy Run and Poker Derby takes place Saturday, July 22 at 8 a.m. Proceeds support South Okanagan Women in Need, with registration by donation. The poker derby is a guided motorcycle tour through the Okanagan with four poker hand stops and lunch. Bring an unwrapped toy for a girl or boy to cover breakfast and registration fees. The toy run leaves the Penticton legion branch at 502 Martin St. at 10 a.m. Registration can be done online.

John Reischman and The Jaybirds perform at The Dream Cafe, Friday, July 21, at 8 p.m.

Rock the Sun Street Dance takes place Friday, July 21 from 6 to 9 p.m. This no-cost street dance has live music, dancing and local food, all taking place in the 400 block of Main Street in Penticton.

The Many Hats Theatre Company presents “The Norwegians” Friday, July 21 through Sunday, July 23 at the Cannery Stage, 1475 Fairview Rd. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. Ticket prices are $19 and $22. For more information, contact the Many Hats Theatre Company at 250-460-1842
