B.C.'s independent police watchdog clears RCMP officer of fatal shooting

SURREY, B.C. - An RCMP officer on Vancouver Island has been cleared of any potential wrongdoing following a fatal shooting two years ago.

The Independent Investigations Office has issued its report into the July 2015 shooting in Port Hardy.

It says officers encountered the knife-wielding man after he had made threatening comments to others in the northeastern Vancouver Island community.

Investigators say numerous witnesses describe the suspect as "lunging toward" the two officers as they got out of their cruiser.

The report says the man was shot five times when he ignored repeated commands to drop his weapon.

The office says it finds that neither RCMP member committed an offence so the matter will not be referred to Crown counsel for consideration of charges.
