Kamloops author Nick Klie has released his second science fiction comic book after his first one first proved to be a success.

Loaded with action, bright imagery and futuristic characters, Life the Necropolis: The Red Wizard combines old-style comic book animation with a modern plot.

“It’s a science fiction story about another planet, mercenaries go on a quest to fight an evil necromancer to stop the apocalypse,” Klie said.

Last year Klie, who manages a comic book store in Kamloops called High Octane Comics, took a leap of faith when he self-published his first comic, Life The Necropolis.

At the time, he was unsure how it would be received by readers. He printed a few hundred copies, which sold out in matter of two months.

“I was planning to go to events to promote it but I didn’t have a chance,” he said. “I sold some online but most of the copies were sold at the store, I was shocked at how the community supported me.”

Klie said it was always his plan to create another comic in the series. This time he printed hundreds of more copies.

“Comics are always about the next issue. The first one did well, but I’m more nervous about this one. Your friends and family will buy your first album, but will people be interested enough to buy my second?”

He said this second comic book is a bit more gory than the first, but still suitable for all ages of readers.

“There is a lot of exploding heads and a bit more blood and guts with this one, but the target audience is basically from kids to adults," he said. "These are the kinds of comics I remember reading as a kid and teenager.”

Klie does both the writing and drawing for his comics.

“I draw it all in an old-fashioned way with pen and paper, like what they used to do in the 60s, then do the colouring on photo shop, so it’s some old techniques combined with some new.”

Writing the first comic was challenging for Klie as he had to learn how to write with the knowledge it was going to be printed and had to fit a specific page count. He was better prepared when writing the second one but said a lot of pre-planning goes into the production.

He got the comic printed at The Printing Place in Kamloops.

“The staff there are fantastic, I got quotes from in and out of town and online and they had the best price,” he said. “They were great to work with, did a professional job and I was so happy I could keep it local.”

Readers won’t be able to purchase the first comic book, Klie only did one printing.

“If you got one, you got one,” he said. “I wanted it to be special to celebrate a moment, and if we’re all lucky, some day it will be worth money."

Klie will be at the store on Free Comic Book Day, Saturday May 4, selling and signing his new comic.
